I Just Lost 10 Pounds
Well OK not really, but I did remove some serious weight that was killing me. My hair. Sure, we all know that a summer cut is a great thing to have, and with the temperatures here in DC doing what they are doing as of late, it feels good to remove the hair anyway.
But as I have learned, working in a kitchen makes short hair imperative. We do wear hats, but they are loose hats generally, and for good reason. The simple fact is this - kitchens are hot. And if you are tall like me, and your spend a lot of your day in front of a hot range of cook tops with boiling water on them, and your face in a salamander*, that is damn hot. And having a big bush of hair - that makes it downright hellish.
How much hair did I take off? Well, check it out:

An amazing transformation. So much hair taken off it changed my race.
OK, but seriously, it is a great haircut that I am sure will make my life a lot more enjoyable in the restaurant tomorrow. But that’s not all the hair I have been losing! Check out these real photos:

Yes, that really is my forearm, and you’ll notice a marked difference in the length of my arm hairs there on the back of my wrist and the rest of my arm. Simply put, when I reach over the stove for pots, over the fire, my arm hairs are burning off. Yes, lots of waxing appointments will no longer be needed as my wrists are now delightfully smooth.
Oh wait, I never waxed my wrists… who the hell does that? So yeah, all I am getting is mild burns on my arms and an incredibly hot working environment.
At least I have a nice haircut to go with it.
*A “salamander” is an overhead broiler. Example.
